Local Authors Offer Children's Program

Local Authors Offer Children’s Program. The Erie Canal Discovery Center is pleased to welcome two local authors, Clare Apolito and Linda Covell, who will present a free, public program and reading from their new children’s books on Saturday, December 8 at 11 a.m. at the Discovery Center, 24 Church Street, Lockport.
Clare Apolito was an elementary school teacher in the Lockport City School District for 33 years where she taught grades 1-3. Her pursuit to write children’s books became a reality when she created “Dinosaur Dreams,” a book that originated from a teaching lesson. Clare was often able to find the appropriate balance between structured teaching and a creative learning environment for students. As a result, Clare entered a dinosaur contest from a Weekly Reader that her class was studying. With the help of her husband, Harry, they built an inflatable Stegosaurus from large pieces of black plastic. Out of the hard work, fun, and creative thinking, the dinosaur came to life, ten feet high and twenty feet long. Her students would also perform dinosaur songs and skits in front of the dinosaur model for other classes to watch. Her sons, Christopher and Kevin, from a young age were always her inspiration giving her tips from a child’s perspective. Now, her grandchildren have had the opportunity to read her book, “Dinosaur Dreams,” and enjoyed it-already asking for the sequel. “What child doesn’t love dinosaurs and the associated sense of adventure” says Clare. She said she had fun writing and illustrating her book and she hopes others enjoy reading it.
Linda Brong Covell is a lifelong resident of the Lockport, New York area. She has a Master’s degree in educational counseling and was an elementary education teacher for 2 area districts. She retired as a special education counselor with Orleans Niagara BOCES in 1995 after 32 years as an educator. Linda’s children’s book is entitled, “Beatties’ Tale,” the story of a rescued cat. “Beatties’ Tale” was illustrated by local artist, Vax Liu. Covell has written two other books, “Cold Spring Cemetery: A Place of Peace, History and Natural Beauty”, and “This is Our Last Cat and Other Broken Promises” about the her work in feline rescue. In addition to her books, Ms. Covell has a copyright on a therapeutic card game, “Fishing For Feelings,” for use in families and by therapists working with families and children. She and her husband, The Rev. Dr. Roger Covell, a retired American Baptist clergyman, are active volunteers in area organizations and with their church. Linda is the recipient of an Unsung Hero Award from the Union Sun and Journal in 2010 and was a nominee for the Niagara YWCA’s Outstanding Women in 2012. Artist and illustrator Vax Liu, was born in Taiwan and raised in the United States. She graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2012. Music, dance, and the arts are what drives her to learn and to embrace new thoughts and experiences.
Admission for this event at 11 a.m. on December 8 is free, but a free-will donation is always gratefully received. For more information, contact the Erie Canal Discovery Center at 439-0431.
