Erie Canal Discovery Center announces the 2012 song contest winners.

The Erie Canal Discovery Center is pleased to announce the winners of its Erie Canal Song Contest.
This is the fifth year for the contest and its popularity has been growing each year. Winning first place
is Doc Stuart (Stuart Shapiro) with his entry “Digger N” Haulers.” Doc Stuart is no stranger to area
audiences and has won the contest on two prior occasions. The second place entry was written by
Donna Dutchess and is entitled, “Home on the Erie Canal.” Third place went to Joseph Baschnagel
for his song, “Six Years on the Erie Canal.” Honorable mention is going out to Kimberlyann Meal
for “The Lamp Lighter,” John Schimminger for “Come Away With Me on the E-ri-ee,” and Hank
Chlebowski for “My Father’s Dream.” Song Contest Chairman Rick Heenan said, “Each of the entries
this year was outstanding.” He explained that entries were judged by a team of area musicians and
civic leaders.
