Looking for something to keep your kids entertained for the summer? Our Kids’ Summer History Program returns for summer 2018, with four new themes making history fun for kids ages 7-12.

Each day’s activities will run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The cost for each weekly program is $20, which includes hands-on activities, craft materials, field trips and an afternoon snack.

This summer’s dates and themes are:

July 11th- Toys and Games Through the Ages- Did you know that many toys and games have stories behind their creation? Learn about the origin of some of your favorite toys and make a few simple toys to take home with you. Kids can play games that were popular during different times in history. Activities include making a Mr. Potato Head with a real potato, constructing a 19th century animated toy and playing outdoor games.

July 18th-Don’t Throw That Out!- This program explores what people recycled throughout history. Many people think recycling used materials is a new habit to protect the environment but recycling has been taking place for as long as people have been on earth. Learn how different cultures from various time periods used and reused materials to create or repair items that they needed. Make a Native American craft, braid a rag rug and use real World War II ration coupons to trade for products.

July 25th- Revolutionary War Traitors and Spies- Military strategy and soldiers were not the only weapons the British and American Armies used to fight the Revolutionary War. Learn how spies and traitors helped both sides of the conflict. Make different “spy” gadgets and a book with a secret compartment to hold your special treasures.

August 1st- Natural History in Your Own Backyard- Nature is all around us, we just have to look for it. Take a walk around the neighborhood of the Historical Society and see what you can find in nature. Learn about the plants, animals, rocks and fossils that exist in the backyards and fields of Niagara County. Take a walk and photograph the nature that you see, make a bird feeder for your yard and take home a real fossil.

Museum staff and volunteers lead each program at the History Center’s 215 Niagara St. complex. Children should plan to bring a lunch each day. We ask that all parents leave their children for the duration of the program session.

You can find discount coupons worth $5 off the registration fee in the Town of Lockport Recreation Department summer newsletter.

Advance registration is necessary. Please call the History Center at 434-7433 or email at annmarie@niagarahistory.org
