Jeff Degnan Wins Key to the Locks Award

The Erie Canal Discovery Center is proud to announce that local canal enthusiast Jeffery
Degnan has been selected to receive the 7th Annual Key to the Locks Award on May 5
at 11am at the Discovery Center, 24 Church Street in Lockport. The Key to the Locks
is awarded to a local citizen from Niagara County who best promotes and exemplifies
community spirit and heritage. Community members provided nominations and a panel
comprised of civic leaders and previous winners reviewed the entries. Previous award
winners include Lockport Mayor Michael Tucker, David Kinyon, Jane Whitmore, Clint
Starke, Becky Burns, and Joe Whalen.

City of Lockport native and lifelong resident Jeffery Degnan, has been a member of
the Lockport Canal Development Task Force for over fifteen years and a member of
the staff to the Niagara County Department of Economic Development for over thirty
years. He has tried to show his love for the Lockport community by giving back in a
number of ways to help Lockport succeed. His involvement in the Lockport community
has been apparent through his active participation in a number of Erie Canal related
projects, particularly the Flight of Five locks restoration, the overhaul of the Rileys
Way walking tour signage, Canalway Trail design and funding issues, the Lockport
Harbor and Marina project, Historic Lockport wayfinding signage, the Lockport Local
Waterfront Revitalization Plan (LWRP), the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor
Management Plan, the annual Lockport Canal Cleanup, the preservation of the buildings
on Canal Street/ Richmond Avenue, realignment of the High Street bridge, the creation
of the Lockport- Jewel of the Erie Canal brochure, interpretive signage, the Transit North
initiative, and the recently completed Flight of Five Interpretation Plan.
