On Saturday, August 16th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Niagara History Center will be hosting a FREE Erie Canal Family Fun Day on the museum’s grounds. Areas will be set-up to recreate places, events and businesses that people would have encountered along the Erie Canal in the 19th century. We are looking for students who would like to take on roles such as shop clerk, inn keeper, apple farmer, canal boat librarian, surveyor and more. Each area would include a brief history of how that place or occupation related to the Erie Canal as well as a short hands-on activity for kids and/or families to participate in. There will also be other non-role playing activities in which will need help as well. Time commitment is 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (this includes assisting with set-up in the morning and take down in the afternoon). Two students will be assigned to each area. If needed, each volunteer will receive a letter with the number of hours completed for submission to your school.
A one to two hour overview and training session will take place the week before on Saturday, August 9th starting at 10 a.m. and going no later than 12 noon. At this time, we will fill out paperwork, assign roles, distribute scripts, go over activities, tour the museum grounds and answer any questions you might have. These hours will also be included on your letter. This will be a fun-filled day that you can share with your friends.
