The Colonel William Bond House
The Colonel William Bond House (143 Ontario Street, one block from Niagara Street)
A National Register Home built in 1824 by Colonel William Bond, it was the first brick home in Lockport. The home was later occupied by Jesse Hawley who is credited with persuading DeWitt Clinton to build the Erie Canal. It was also owned by another prominent Lockport family, the Pruddens. In 1887, the Chase family acquired the home and it remained in that family until 1968. The Chase family were relatives of Salmon P. Chase, Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Chases were also related to the Bonds through marriage. The home was purchased by the Niagara County Historical Society in 1968 and was restored to its original floor plan over the next several years.
The house is interpreted to reflect the lifestyle of a middle class family in Lockport during the Erie Canal’s busiest and most profitable years in the early to mid-19th century.

The Colonel William Bond House History displays furnishings in the house’s 12 rooms are from that period and, with a few exceptions, are not original to home itself.
